How do I do Keyword Research

Keyword research

A Keyword – What is it?

When you search for something in Google, Bing, Yahoo or other search engines, the words that you put in the search box are called keywords. How Do I Do Keyword Research

In the above example, Google searches instantly for websites that have those keywords “how to build a shed” or “How do I do keyword research” or content that is related to each of these subjects.

A keyword can be something as short as one or two words, such as Lose Weight, or it can be longer, for instance, How to Lose Weight, or even longer, How to Lose Weight Fast.

The longer keywords are called Long Tail Keywords and can be very lucrative in helping you make money.

Long Tail Keywords

Keywords can be short or long. The long keywords, like “how to lose weight and still drink Beer” is sometimes better to target than shorter keywords such as “How to lose weight”.

There will be more searches for the “How to lose weight” keyword. That means there is more competition from others who are also targeting that keyword (“How to lose weight”).

The more competition you have, the less likely you will end up on the first page of the results when you perform that searchHow Do I Do Keyword Research “How to lose weight”.

The longer tail keyword “How to lose weight and still drink Beer” will have fewer competing websites competing for that exact same long tail keyword.

You will want to find those long tail keywords that have very few competing websites.

Keyword Research

To find the best Keyword to build your content around, you will need to do some research.  In order to research a keyword that you want to write about, use a Keyword Tool.

The Keyword Tool I highly recommend is Jaaxy. You can create a free account here.

All you do is start trying different keywords in the search bar and see what you will get:

What you need to know is how many global searches per month are there for that keyword, and how much competition you are up against to make it to the first page of the search results.

Keyword Competition

Your competition is what comes up on the first page of the search engine results (SERP).  It is important to target a keyword how do I do keyword researchthat has low competition, especially when you are first starting out. It will be easier to get on the first page.

The lower the competition, especially when you are first starting out, the better. You will want the competition as shown in Jaaxy to be under 100. However, I would recommend finding keywords that are even lower, under 50 or even 30 or lower.

If you do this you will find it will be easier to rank and get on the first page. The monthly search volume may be lower also, but that’s ok. You will be creating more content as time goes by and you will get more and more traffic as you do.

Once you find your keyword with low competition, visit those sites. You will want to see what you are up against and then know how to make your content stand out and be better.

Alphabet Soup Technique

This is a technique where you can get ideas for keywords that you can then put in the keyword tool. Think of a possible keyword  then put that word or words into the Google Search bar:

How Do I Do Keyword Research

This technique will give you ideas of some other keywords you may want to research further. To investigate further, put in each letter of the alphabet after shed and different words will pop up giving you suggestions. These suggestions are words people are searching for looking for information.

Put the keyword into your keyword tool and find out how many searches per month that keyword gets and find out how much competition you have. You will want your competition under 300 at the very least. The lower the competition the better for you to rank.
